Enliven enables older people and people with disability to live independently at home by providing home support and day programmes at the Enliven Centre.

Enliven Restorative Home Support provides clients with a team of experts that support clients in their journey to independence, whilst the Enliven Centre is a nurturing environment that encourages physical, mental and social wellbeing.

Day programmes are also available in Gisborne and Central Hawke's Bay.

Enliven Home Support

Enliven Home Support provides specialised care, individually tailored to each client’s specific needs. Our friendly support workers are trained to deliver practical assistance with day-to-day needs, as well as the emotional support and encouragement that can make such a difference.

We focus on restoring the physical, mental and social well-being of the people in our care. The goal is to work in partnership with our clients in a way that maximises their independence and helps them achieve their goals.

Enliven is the only service of its kind that gives you access to a team of experts, including a dietitian, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and social worker.

Enliven Home Support is funded by the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, but even if clients don’t qualify for funding, they can be provided with a private payers’ rate. Ask your doctor to refer you to Enliven, or speak to the Enliven team.

The Enliven Centre

The Enliven Centre on Pakowhai Road provides day programmes to over 150 people each week, and is a beautiful environment for people to socialise, share a meal, and participate in a range of programmes ranging from Tai Chi and cooking classes, to fitness instruction and art. There is even a gym set-up for those who really take their fitness seriously! Clients are encouraged to challenge themselves, and they have achieved some outstanding results.

Community Strength and Balance Programme

Enliven is the East Coast’s lead agency for a falls minimisation initiative, ‘Community Strength and Balance’, driven by ACC, the Ministry of Health and the Health Quality and Safety Commission (HQSC).

As lead agency, Enliven takes referrals for Approved Community Strength & Balance Classes, supporting exercise providers to maintain quality classes and increasing the number of Strength and Balance classes available.

The aim of the initiative is to reduce incidents of falls and fractures and support older people, who are at risk of falling or aged 65 and over, to live stronger for longer in their own homes, on their own terms.

“Falling over is not a ‘normal’ part of the ageing process and we understand that older people want to control if and when it’s time to move to residential care. A ‘fall’ shouldn't take that choice away from them.

The Live Stronger for Longer brand represents the collaborative effort from Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB), community exercise providers, carers and health professionals to reduce the number and severity of falls in our region.

The clinical aspect supports the work Enliven is facilitating in the community. Only community providers who meet nationally approved evidence-based criteria for group strength and balance will be eligible to use the quality mark.

Look for the ‘tick’ when selecting a class to know that it meets national agreed standards.

If you are an exercise provider and interested in becoming an approved Strength and Balance provider or wish to access an approved class please contact Rebekah on 0800 4 Enliven for more information.

KEY STATISTICS:

  • People over 65, have a 1 in 3 chance of falling, and between 10% and 20% of these falls result in an injury such as a hip fracture, hospitalisation or death

  • Falls are the most common and costly cause of injury in older people
