Amanda Harris, manager of PSEC’s Joll Road charity shop in Havelock North, arrived at work to find the donations bin next to the shop had been broken into for the second time in a month.
Those responsible left used clothing strewn across the pavement and the remains of a shiny new padlock.
“I don’t know what the motive was,” says Amanda, “But if it’s because people can’t afford to pay, we have a rack of free clothes out on the pavement every day and are always happy to have a discreet and non-judgemental chat about how we can help.”
Presbyterian Support East Coast has worked locally for 75 years, supporting families, people with disabilities and older people through its services Enliven and Family Works. All profits from the three volunteer-staffed PSEC charity shops in Napier, Taradale and Havelock North go directly to that work, helping PSEC close its annual $1.5 million funding gap.
