Peter Cullwick, 53, has once again proven that determination and hard work can overcome challenges. On 17 November 2024, Peter completed the 12.8km Peak Trail Blazer up Te Mata Peak, raising funds for Havelock North Primary School.
Peter has competed in duathlons, is a medal-winning taekwondo expert, and has represented New Zealand in the Special Olympic Winter World Games in Japan in 2005. His dedication to fitness and his community is truly inspiring.
Peter was able to realise his dream of doing The Peak Trail Blazer event through the support of Neil Wagstaff from Peak Fitness, trainer Angela Ranson, and Maggie Sheardown from Enliven Disability. Peak Fitness, proud sponsors of the race, is also where Peter trains weekly with his friend Lewey. Neil from Peak Fitness says, “Peter is a legend and is always focused on his training. He attends religiously, and it’s great to have him at the gym.” Maggie from Enliven Disability ensured Peter was emotionally calm and mentally prepared for the run, organised his running gear and made sure he had sufficient sustenance for the run.
Reflecting on the support he received, Peter attributes his success to the team of Angela, Neil, and Maggie who together with him made completing the challenge possible, “I wanted to do it for my family,” he says. Despite the race being tough, Peter is already looking forward to next year’s event, promising to push even harder.
Peter’s new goals include more fitness with weights and training, enjoying his work at Alfie’s Plant Barn, helping with various gardens in Havelock North, and supporting bowls at RSA Napier in memory of his late granddad who enjoyed playing bowls. Peter is also looking forward to a visit from his US family over Christmas and continues to pursue his passion for photography.
Peter’s latest achievement shows how far you can go with perseverance and community support. He reminds us to set our goals high and keep pushing harder to reach them, no matter the challenge. Congratulations Peter!
