A letter that brings generations together
There is something special about receiving a handwritten letter. It may be a small gesture, but it can create a meaningful connection.
Earlier this year, Enliven Older People’s Services brought PSEC staff and older people attending the Community Day Programme together through a special Pen Pal initiative.
Participating staff were matched with people attending the programme, creating an opportunity to get to know one another through handwritten letters, personal stories and shared experiences.
In a world where so much of our communication happens through screens, receiving a letter written especially for you can feel quite special. A few thoughtful words can brighten a day, bring back a fond memory or simply remind someone that they are being thought of.
For people attending the Community Day Programme, it was a lovely opportunity to share a little about their lives, interests and experiences. For PSEC staff, it was a chance to get to know someone they might not otherwise meet and discover the person behind the name.
The Pen Pal initiative is a simple example of intergenerational connection. It gives people of different ages the chance to exchange stories, learn from one another and build relationships.

It is this sense of connection that sits at the heart of Grandparents Day.
Connection matters at every age. Whether it comes through family, friendship, community or a handwritten letter, a meaningful relationship helps us feel valued, included and part of something bigger.
Sometimes, a new friendship begins with just a few words on a page.
